This is an archived post form Dec. 2012 - but a good refresher on dog food. As most of our puppy owners know, Brad and I have used Science Diet for years and have been happy with it. Recently with our new puppy Phoenix though, we found as we tried to transition her over to Science Diet puppy food that she was having a hard time handling it - by that I mean big time diarrhea!
Not the most helpful when you are trying to potty train - we were having to set an alarm EVERY hour at night to take her out or she was having accidents in her kennel. Not fun- I was enjoying my own kids sleeping through the night! We did some research on dog foods and found some disturbing facts. Science Diet recently changed its dog food formula and although they claim it is healthier - they are coating their dog kibble with PLASTIC!! Read about it here and here. Brad & I found a website called Dog Food Advisor where we got some really good information on different dog food and what ingredients they had that were bad or good. Each brand gets a star rating - Science Diet got 2.5 stars out of 5. For the record we switched to Nutro Max. Not only does it get a higher rating then Science Diet, (3.5 stars) but it is also a little more pocket book friendly, and we can find it at our local Fleet Farm. As soon as we switched her to Nutro Max she had normal stools and can now sleep all night with no accidents in her kennel. We switched our adult dogs to Nutro Max Lamb Meal & Rice food, and so far they love it and stools have remained the same. We will see as time goes on how we like it as far as shiny coats, less gas, and less stool. We will keep you updated!! So do your research, and hope you have a "solid" Christmas! Ho Ho!
